ABOUT 笑福亭笑子

Showko Showfukutei 笑福亭笑子 is a Japanese comedian, ventriloquist and professional Rakugo (traditional comedy) performer. She has lived and worked internationally in London, Tokyo, Osaka, Singapore and Melbourne and has performed on network TV, radio and at major comedy clubs, festivals and events including both the Edinburgh Fringe and Melbourne International Comedy Festival.


She has received rave reviews for her delightful and unique stand-up comedy and quirky ventriloquism with Rakugo humour.


In 2016 Showko was a finalist on Australia’s Got Talent and has gone on to appear on both ABC Radio and TV. She was also was featured in a major Japanese TV special for Yomiuri TV “Good Chikyu bin” based on her life and comedy.


Outside of her main comedy world Showko regularly entertains for corporate events and is engaged as a speaker with her unique life experiences and as the only fully trained professional Rakugo performer living outside of Japan.


Her real name is Ayako Ono but the stage name Showko Showfukutei 笑福亭笑子 was awarded to her after completing a 3 year Rakugo apprenticeship. Rakugo is a 400 year old traditional form of Japanese comedy storytelling. 


Showko is a member of the Kamigata Rakugo Association.
